Jonathan Rose Companies began working with Signature Theatre in 2004 when it was selected by the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation (LMDC) to be located at the World Trade Center (WTC) site. Signature Theatre is the only theatre in the world dedicated to producing season-long explorations of the work of a single playwright-in-residence.

Signature was originally to be co-located with the Joyce Theatre as part of the WTC Performing Arts Complex. When start of construction on that building was delayed, Signature Theatre began looking at other possible locations. Jonathan Rose Companies is assisting in site identification and due diligence process work with all parties including Signature Theatre, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, and the design team of Frank Gehry & Partners and Auerbach Pollack Friedlander.

Signature is currently located on the far west end of 42nd Street with one 160-seat theater. In a new location, the plans call for three theaters of varying sizes, allowing it to increase the number of productions each season. Envisioned as a center for the performing arts, the new location will be designed with cafes and other amenities where artists can come to engage with each other and their audiences – both formally and informally.

As part of evaluating a site that requires each theatre to be located on a separate floor, the most recent design concept focuses the lobbies of each theatre around a central atrium. It is anticipated that in addition to LMDC funding the project will receive funding from the City, and be designed to at least a LEED Silver standard.
