PS41

Jonathan Rose Companies is serving as the Owner’s Representative for P.S. 41 in developing a green learning laboratory on an underutilized roof to create open space, improve air quality, reduce energy consumption, and raise environmental literacy in inner-city youth.

The Greenroof Environmental Literacy Laboratory (GELL) at P.S.41 aims to instill a commitment to sustainability in NYC school children. As a template for converting asphalt roofs into dynamic green learning spaces, GELL has been nurtured by actively engaged community partnerships that distinguish the project as an important step towards accomplishing the city’s sustainability goals as described in PlaNYC 2030.

GELL seeks to foster greater environmental stewardship in future generations. Through direct observation and involvement in applied research on the green roof area, P.S. 41 students will take-on empirical lessons that engage and reinforce their understanding of environmental issues directly affecting them.

In addition to its educational benefits, the green roof at PS 41 will improve air quality and reduce the heat island effect in the surrounding neighborhood. It will also significantly cut energy consumption and decrease storm water run-off. A further goal, through careful selection of plantings, is that the green roof provide a wildlife refuge for declining and rare native species of birds, snails, and insects specific to Manhattan’s original habitat.
