JY Ranch

The JY Ranch is an extraordinary property located within one of the most beautiful areas of Grand Teton National Park near Jackson, Wyoming.  Its dramatic setting at Phelps Lake overlooking Death Canyon is profoundly moving, and the ecology of the JY Ranch is fittingly composed of diverse, sensitive habitats that support numerous plant and animal species and that demand careful stewardship.  Over the years the property owner, Laurance S. Rockefeller, transferred a large portion of the ranch to Grand Teton National Park.  Shortly before he passed away in 2004, he began the planning process to give the remaining 1,106 acres to the nation as part of a model partnership with the National Park Service that would demonstrate new ways of providing public access to open space without diminishing the fragile ecology.

Mr. Rockefeller engaged D.R. Horne & Company (DRH) with assistance from its affiliate, Horne Rose, to develop and implement a plan that would protect the intrinsic qualities of the ranch while accommodating the public in a manner that encourages learning, stewardship and reverence for nature.  DRH developed a vision that would enable visitors to experience the ranch and its extraordinary environment through two main elements: The JY Ranch Interpretive Center and the JY Ranch Preserve Walk. Once complete, the JY Ranch will be a model public-private partnership for conservation stewardship that builds visitors’ reverence and responsibility for the natural world through personal experience and interpretive programs.

As part of the planning, DRH oversaw historical documentation and ecological assessments, and developed specific recommendations to enhance the property, protect and restore its environmental resources, and allow public visitation.  This work included the development of a program plan, budget, phasing plan, and implementation strategy.  Currently, DRH is managing design and construction, and relocation of historic structures, as well as donation of the JY Ranch to the National Park Service.  To facilitate implementation, DRH is coordinating an interdisciplinary team of architects, landscape architects, and civil engineers.
