Duke Farms

As the Owner’s Representative for the Duke Farms Foundation (DFF), Jonathan Rose Companies is assisting Duke Farms with a multi-year construction and landscape restoration project. The project aims to align with the Duke Farms mission to be an inspirational model for environmental stewardship.

Duke Farms is 2,700-acres with buildings, woodlands, wetlands, meadows, and farmland that seeks to “model the best practices of environmental stewardship, lead in environmental sustainability and bio-friendly energy consumption, demonstrate knowledge of sustainable techniques for buildings and landscapes, and manage the land for healthy, sustainable biodiversity.”

The Farm Barn and Orchid Range (orientation and education buildings) are being designed to a LEED Platinum standard. The historic Coach Barn and landscape will be designed to a LEED Gold standard.

The anticipated LEED ratings do not sufficiently describe the transformative thinking that has gone into the strategic plan for this project.

Access to the property by carbon-emitting vehicles will be limited to a single road and parking area. To tour the property the public will walk, bicycle or take alternative fuel vehicles. A dramatic reduction in conditioned space – from 350,000 square feet to approximately 70,000 square feet – is being made possible by focusing new landscape improvements on native species that require no conditioning and eliminate the need for pesticides and other non-organic measures.
