The Drawing Center

Jonathan Rose Companies has been working with The Drawing Center since 2004 when they were selected by the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation (LMDC) to be one of four cultural institutions located at the World Trade Center (WTC) site. Soon after completion of Schematic Design, it was determined that a new location in Lower Manhattan would need to be identified. Jonathan Rose Companies led the site selection process and continues to provide a full scope of owner’s representative services. The goal from the beginning has been to create a new home that gives The Drawing Center the opportunity to not only improve its institutional capacity, but to ensure its relevance in today’s ever-evolving cultural landscape.

A dynamic part of New York City’s cultural life since 1977, The Drawing Center is the only nonprofit institution in the country to focus on the exhibition of drawings. It has emerged as one of the preeminent venues for important historical and contemporary exhibitions, attracting international and local audiences. By relocating to a new facility, The Drawing Center intends to increase all of its program areas including its exhibition spaces, publications capacity, slide registry and educational outreach.

A unique site has been identified – a corner lot on the same block as the Southstreet Seaport Museum building with south facing views towards both the East River and a new David Rockwell designed public park. Design criteria include addressing the needs of a small vertical site and expressing the institutions mission in a way that is appropriate to the complex and historical urban location.

Giving physical shape to the new facility must answer to The Drawing Center’s core values, its innovative approach and its rigorous standards of execution and presentation. A design that is successful will do all this within the constraints of the Drawing Center’s budget and meet their goal to achieve at least a LEED Silver rating.
