Atlantic Center
Brooklyn, New York

Winrock at Night

Atlantic Center was one of the first mixed-use transit oriented development projects planned to revitalize an inner city neighborhood, and was the first of many Peter Calthorpe/Jonathan Rose collaborations.  The 26-acre site in downtown Brooklyn was designed to accommodate over 450 co-op apartments, 600,000 square feet of retail space and 2.7 million square feet of office space.  In the 1984 master planning effort, Calthorpe coordinated the physical planning, while Rose ran the community outreach process, managed environmental issues, developed pro formas, and obtained land use approvals for the project.  Sitting on top of the Long Island Railroad lines, 12 subway lines, and 14 bus lines, the project was a prototype for urban transit related communities.  The apartments were designed to fit into 4-story townhomes clustered around courtyards and mews streets.  Featuring passive solar energy, gardens, parks, and affordable home ownership, this innovative project was the first new development in New York to be designed with recycled materials.

The project was halted by a series of environmental law suits, and eventually sold to Forest City/Ratner, who modified the plan.
