China Institute
New York, New York

GOAL
To develop a new transformative center for the Institute.

CHALLENGE
Identification of a site that can meet China Institute’s diverse program needs.

OUTCOME
Ongoing site search.

Since 1926, China Institute has worked to advance a deeper understanding of China through programs in education, culture, business and art in the belief that cross-cultural understanding strengthens our global community. In light of China’s rapid development and transformation, China Institute also continues to change. China Institute is embarking on a transformative program to advance the Institute’s mission through the construction of a new, expanded center for the Institute that will house its classes, programs, gallery space, exhibitions and offices.

Jonathan Rose Companies’ Civic Development team is providing full advisory and project management services to assist China Institute in this transformation.  Services to date have included advising on the selection of a broker to assist with site search, underwriting and budgeting assistance, programming review with the design team, and board interaction. We will continue to work with the Institute to evaluate potential spaces, negotiate the transaction, and ultimately complete design and construction for the new facility.

The preliminary program includes an enlarged gallery space that will allow China Institute to add a contemporary art exhibition to their current roster of high quality Chinese art.  The language and studio class program will continue to expand, providing up to 10 classrooms and tutoring rooms in the new space.  Public space for lectures, book signings, musical performances, film screenings and other gatherings will be hosted in a new multi-purpose event space.  A new take on a traditional Chinese garden will also be included. The spaces will be designed to maximize the energy efficiency of the space and the health and wellness of the occupants.
